Netflix's Squid Game: Unleashed mobile game surpasses 10m downloads
Netflix’s Squid Game: Unleashed mobile game has reached approximately 10.7 million downloads, according to AppMagic estimates.
Based on the streaming giant’s hit TV series, the multiplayer battle royale launched globally on December 17, 2024, just ahead of the second season’s premiere. The game lets players experience iconic games from the series alongside new contests inspired by classic childhood activities.
A Top Netflix Game
The game’s strong debut has already secured its place as Netflix’s fifth most downloaded mobile title to date. Leading the pack is GTA: San Andreas with 33.8 million installs, followed by Storyteller with 16.8 million, SpongeBob: Get Cooking with 11.4 million, and Bloons TD 6 with 11.2 million.
Most downloads of Squid Game: Unleashed have come from the App Store, accounting for 7.4 million installs, while Google Play represents 3.3 million.
The United States leads in player downloads with 1.8 million, followed by Brazil with 1.1 million, Mexico with 943,000, and India with 855,000. The game’s best day for downloads was January 4, 2025, when it accumulated 1.6 million installs, coinciding with the second season’s airing.
Unlike other Netflix games that require a subscription, Squid Game: Unleashed is currently free for anyone to download for a limited time.
Netflix Gaming Shakeup
The launch of Squid Game: Unleashed comes amidst significant changes in Netflix’s gaming division. Last year, Netflix appointed ex-Epic Games EVP of development Alain Tascan as the new president of the gaming division, succeeding Mike Verdu, who transitioned to VP of GenAI.
Recent changes include the departure of VP of external games Leanne Loombe after three years at the company and the closure of Netflix’s internal triple-A studio, Team Blue. The closure saw high-profile departures, including Overwatch executive producer Chacko Sonny, Halo creative lead Joseph Staten, and God of War art director Rafael Grassetti.
Additionally, Netflix removed GTA 3 and Vice City from its gaming library after one year, leaving San Andreas as the only remaining title from the trilogy.
Netflix’s gaming strategy continues to evolve, with the success of Squid Game: Unleashed demonstrating the potential for wide-reaching appeal in its gaming offerings.
