‘A Minecraft Movie’ Surges to $157M Opening Weekend, Becomes Top Video Game Film Debut of 2025

Warner Bros. Pictures' long-awaited A Minecraft Movie has exceeded all expectations, earning $157 million at the U.S. box office during its opening weekend, and $301 million globally. Originally projected to gross between $70 million and $90 million, the film has now claimed the title of 2025’s highest-grossing domestic debut, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The film’s strong performance outpaced 2023’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which earned $146 million in its first three days domestically. While Mario saw larger five-day figures due to a midweek release, Minecraft now holds the record for the biggest three-day opening for a video game adaptation in U.S. box office history.

“We're absolutely overjoyed A Minecraft Movie has been so warmly received by audiences around the world,” said Warner Bros. studio heads Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy. They credited the decade-long journey and creative oversight of Warner Bros. Pictures' Jesse Ehrman and his team for the film’s successful debut.

The road to release was a long one. First announced in 2014, the adaptation went through multiple creative shifts before landing with director Jared Hess, best known for Napoleon Dynamite and Nacho Libre. The film had a reported production budget of $150 million.

With its blockbuster debut, A Minecraft Movie is not only a win for Warner Bros. but a clear indicator that the demand for well-executed game-to-film adaptations remains strong.
